Cynthia's Story

What is your business idea?

To develop a long-held interest in selling my custom-made and one-of-a-kind jewelry and accessories into a fun and creative reality. I create men’s, women’s and children’s jewelry.

Who are your clients?

My clients are folks who see me at craft fairs offered by Parks and Recreation departments of various cities, pop-up markets, and occasionally in front of my apartment building.

What was the inspiration or catalyst behind your decision to be an entrepreneur?

I knew at a young age that I would be pursuing a jewelry business as a mostly retirement occupation. I tried to do a jewelry business when I was 17. I had investors who believed in me and my vision for converting costume beaded pieces into accessories. Unfortunately, it was time-consuming and life got in the way.

Is this a complete career change for you?

Yes, if you compare the fields in my working life. Restaurant business, chef, baker, manager, business manager. Then accounting and tax-related functions at several commercial design businesses. I retired from the payroll department of City College.

How did Encorepreneur sessions help you?

I had already started my business before the sessions. In fact, I had been in business for a year. Encorepreneur helped me in getting in touch with the reason that I do jewelry in the first place; it’s fun, and to get in touch with the artist that’s inside of me. It is the artist’s journey that I value the most.

What are your key takeaways?

My key takeaways are listening, listening and listening. I learn the most when I am open to hearing what other people say. I make a point of acting on what I hear people suggest in the next show. I’m still trying to learn how to read people’s needs and to meet them.

Share a favorite quote, song, book that inspires/motivates you in your journey as an Encorepreneur.

“Onward and upward.”
